Haverford Hands Baseball First CC Loss

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team nearly overcame a four-run deficit in the latter stages of Saturday's home contest with Haverford, but the Fords fended off a potential big eighth inning to hand the Bears their first Centennial Conference setback, 6-3.

Senior Vincent Terry was 2-for-3 with an RBI single for Ursinus (16-5, 5-1), which saw its six-game winning streak halted.

Trailing 4-0 after Ben Furlong's two-run, fourth-inning home run and a wild pitch that plated a run in the fifth, the Bears went to work on a comeback in the sixth. Senior Alex Campbell singled and scored on classmate CJ Diana's double to left, and Terry's base hit down the right-field line plated Diana to halve the deficit. Ursinus pulled within a run when sophomore Carter Usowski delivered a two-out RBI double to score Campbell in the bottom of the seventh.

The home side had a golden chance to tie or take the lead in the eighth, when Terry doubled to open the inning. Senior Seth Regensburg drew a walk, and junior Travis Kozak's single to left center field loaded the bases with only one out. But Patrick O'Shea dialed up a 4-6-3 double play to escape unscathed, and Matt Goss came all the way around to score on an inside-the-park homer that added a pair of insurance tallies in the ninth. O'Shea worked a 1-2-3 bottom half to hand Ursinus its first conference defeat.

Campbell finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored for the Bears, while Kozak was 2-for-4. Terry and Kozak each stole a base.

Dylan Livingston (3-1) earned the win for the Fords (12-9-1, 3-2-1), allowing two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings; he walked five and struck out three.

Senior Connor Moriarty (1-1) was solid in his second start of the season. The right-hander tossed seven innings, surrendering four runs on five hits while whiffing seven and walking four. Junior Matt Radwanski pitched a scoreless eighth in relief.

The baseball team tries to start a new winning streak at Gwynedd Mercy on Monday, April 10.
