Pisik, Jablonski Help Baseball Split CC Opener

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The strong right arm of Sean Pisik and the powerful left-handed swing of Chris Jablonski sparked the Ursinus College baseball team to a 7-3 win over Gettysburg in the opener of Saturday's Centennial Conference doubleheader, the Bears' first in the series in four years. The Bullets brought the bats in the nightcap, scoring five runs in the third and five more in the fourth to secure a split with a 12-6 decision.

Pisik worked into the ninth inning of Game One, throwing 136 pitches to will Ursinus (15-8, 1-1) to its first defeat of Gettysburg (15-9, 1-1) since 2012, snapping a six-game skid in the series. Jablonski continued his recent surge, homering for the third consecutive game on the way to a 3-for-4 effort that included two runs scored and two RBI. His solo shot in the bottom of the sixth gave him 14 for his career, moving him within one of second place all-time at Ursinus; it also gave him 90 career RBI, good for third in school history.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Bears took control with a four-run frame and some help from the sun. Junior Travis Kozak led off with a walk, and singles by classmates CJ Diana and Vincent Terry packed the sacks with only one out. Fellow junior Jay Farrell lofted a high fly into center field, where the Gettysburg outfielder lost it in the glare, allowing the tying run to score and moving everyone up a bag.

Jablonski came through with a two-run single to right center, and junior Austin Feuerman's two-out walk with the bases loaded gifted Ursinus a 5-2 lead when the dust settled.

The Bullets got one back in the sixth, but Jablonski had his answer ready, crushing one over the fence in center for his third round-tripper in as many outings. Jablonski came around to score on junior Alex Campbell's RBI double in the seventh, completing the scoring for the early afternoon session.

Eight strong innings in his pocket, Pisik went back out for the ninth. Back-to-back singles to open the at-bat brought in freshman Matt Radwanski, who immediately doused the flames with a strikeout, pop-out, and fly-out to earn his second save.

Pisik worked around 10 hits to allow just three runs (two earned) in his eight-plus frames; the righty struck out five and walked only one in improving to 4-1 on the year.

Luke Lawrence was 3-for-4 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot for Gettysburg.

Diana finished 3-for-4 with an RBI double in the first, Campbell (2-for-4, RBI) and Farrell (2-for-5, RBI) had two hits each, and Kozak scored two runs for the Bears, who knocked around Gettysburg ace Rich Power to the tune of five runs in five innings. The left-hander, who came in second in the CC in ERA (1.39), allowed eight hits and walked six with three strikeouts.

The Bears fell behind 6-0 after a third-inning outburst from Gettysburg, but the first career homer off the bat of junior Kieran Geyer got the home side on the board. A single by Terry, a gapper to left-center from Farrell, and a single by Jablonski cut the deficit to four and put runners on the corners, and Ursinus pulled to within 6-3 on a sacrifice fly by Campbell.

But the Bullets fired back, the first five batters reaching as part of a second straight five-run barrage that staked Gettysburg to an 11-3 advantage.

Geyer smacked a two-run double over the center fielder's head in the seventh, and Jablonski's RBI single scored Terry to make it 11-6. Gettysburg added one more run in the eighth.

Henry Klimowicz (3-for-5, two runs, three RBI) and John Convery (3-for-5, two runs) had three hits apiece for Gettysburg, and Brad DeMartino went the distance, allowing six runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

Geyer finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and Jablonski was 2-for-3 for Ursinus. Terry went 2-for-4 and scored twice out of the leadoff spot.

The Bears welcome Muhlenberg to Thomas Field for a single Centennial Conference contest on Tuesday, April 5. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
