Baseball Holds Off NYU for Third Straight Win

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Lou Aikins picked up his first collegiate win – and Seth Regensburg earned his first save – in grand fashion Friday, as the Ursinus College baseball team held on for a hard-fought 7-4 victory over NYU in the Big Apple.

Aikins took a one-hitter into the seventh and Regensburg took care of the final four outs after coming on with the tying runs on base in the bottom of the eighth as Ursinus (9-4) won for the sixth time in seven games.

Aikins allowed only a two-out single in the first before running into trouble in the seventh, but the Bears' relievers were there to mop up the mess. The Violets (4-10) had the bases loaded with no one out in the seventh but managed only a single run, and Regensburg left the sacks packed after entering with Ursinus clinging to a precarious three-run lead.

The Bears, as they made a habit of over the course of their Florida trip, pushed runs across early, getting one in the first and another in the second. The opening salvo was courtesy of an RBI single to right-center off the bat of junior Max Jens, who plated freshman Carter Usowski with the first hit of his collegiate career, a bases-loaded liner.

Junior Kieran Geyer doubled the lead in the next inning with a two-bagger into the gap in left-center, sophomore Travis Kozak scoring all the way from first after drawing a leadoff walk.

Still leading by just two in the sixth, some two-out magic delivered the Bears some breathing room. Junior Alex Campbell singled with two outs in a pinch-hit spot, and classmate Austin Kurey followed with his first career home run, a shot down the left-field line that pushed the lead to 4-0.

Until CJ Picerni opened the bottom of the seventh with a double, the only hit Aikins gave up was a two-out single in the first inning. Before then, he had allowed only two runners into scoring position, but the Violets loaded the bases with nobody out after a walk and an infield hit to chase Aikins from the mound.

Sophomore Matt Radwanski squashed the threat immediately with a 6-4-3 double play, limiting the damage to a single run, and Ursinus struck right back with two in the next inning. Junior Timo Muro tripled with one out to bring home Kurey, and Geyer produced a sacrifice fly to stretch it to 7-1.

Making a final push, NYU sliced the deficit in half with a three-run eighth, but Regensburg came on and induced a fly ball to left with the bags full and two outs to strand the tying runs.

Aikins kept the ball on the ground all afternoon, getting 12 ground ball outs to just one fly out. He walked three and struck out four.

Aikins got some help from his defense to erase a leadoff walk in the fourth, as Geyer flipped to Usowski to trigger a 4-6-3 double play, one of two twin killings for the Bears.

Picerni was the lone Violet to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the home side.

Kurey scored two runs in addition to his two-run bomb, while Geyer drove in a pair and scored another. Muro's triple was just his second hit of the season and marked his third career three-bagger. Jablonski walked twice to reach base three times over his five plate appearances.

Ursinus opens its Thomas Field slate with a doubleheader against Pitt-Bradford on Saturday.
