ABINGTON, Pa. – Ursinus College, playing its first game after Spring Break, got a great pitching performance from junior right hander Vince Piccioni (Haverford, Pa./The Haverford School) as the Bears (9-2) defeated Penn State-Abington (2-6) 8-1 on Thursday afternoon.
Piccioni tossed a six-hitter, allowing just one earned run while striking out one and walking two.
At the plate, sophomore left fielder Timo Muro (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) went 3-for-5 with two doubles, while scoring two runs. Sophomore second baseman Jay Farrell (Newtown Square, Pa./Episcopal Academy) also went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, with sophomore catcher Alex Campbell (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) and sophomore catcher Vincent Terry (Beesley's Point, N.J./Ocean City) each getting two hits.
Freshman centerfielder Travis Kozak (Farmington, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and senior third baseman Vince Rondolone (Havertown, Pa./Haverford School) also joined the hit parade, each picking up two hits. Kozak and junior first baseman Christopher Jablonski (Galloway, N.J./St. Augustine) each had two RBI.
Muro scored his first run in the first on a fielding error. In the third, Ursinus got two runs on a home run to centerfield by Jablonski with no outs in the third
Two more runs came in the fifth on a two-run single by Kozak for a 5-1 lead. In the sixth, senior James Hoff (Limerick, Pa./Spring-Ford) reached on a throwing error, which allowed Muro to score for a 6-1 lead.
Sophomore Jake Banks (Philadelphia, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) and Farrell scored their runs in the eighth and the ninth, respectively.
Ursinus is scheduled to play PSU-Brandywine on Friday, then host Case Western Reserve and Pitt-Bradford in the home opener on Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.
