Baseball drops opener of Haverford series, 6-5

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – After rallying back from a 5-1 deficit to tie the score in the eighth, two errors in the of the ninth allowed Haverford to take a 6-5 win from Ursinus in the first game of their two game series on Wednesday at Thomas Field.

Haverford (13-13, 6-4 Centennial) saw centerfielder Nick Miranda go 5-for-5 with three runs scored including the winning run in the ninth. Left fielder Marley Randazzo was 3-for-4 on the day for Haverford. 

For Ursinus, freshman designated hitter Austin Feuerman was 2-for-5 with senior seconds baseman Ralph Aurora hitting a two-run double in the seventh to spark the rally. 

Haverford broke out for two runs in the top of the first as three straight singles, and an error by the right fielder, allowed the Fords to take the early lead. Miranda singled to start the game, which was followed by a single to right by shortstop William Bannard to put two on.

Right fielder George Hatamiya singled to right, scoring Miranda. Bannard would advance to third on the error, while Hatamiya went into second. 

A fielders choice by first baseman Justin Coulter scored Bannard for the second run.
In the bottom of the inning, Aurora was hit by a pitch, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Feuerman would double to center scoring Aurora to cut the Ford lead to 2-1. 

In the top of the second, Haverford plated three as Randazzo singled, then scored on a RBI single to left by Miranda. Miranda scored his second run of the game on a two-run double by catcher Nick Ott, which also scored Hatamiya.From there, Ursinus was handcuffed by pitcher
Casey Fox, as the Bears were held to just one hit through the sixth inning.

In the seventh, the Bears' bats came alive when freshman left fielder Timo Muro got on by an error, then advanced to second on a walk. With two outs, the bases became loaded when freshman catcher Avery Perez was hit by a pitch. Aurora then hit the two-run double off of
Haverford relief pitcher Max Gerard to cut the lead to 5-3.

In the eighth, senior centerfielder Josh Schnell hit a single down the left field line and then stole second. Sophomore first baseman Chris Jablonski walked, followed by a sacrifice bunt from freshman third baseman CJ Diana. Muro grounded out to short to score Schnell, while sophomore shortstop Devyn Kerr singled up the middle to score Jablonski and tie the score.

In the ninth, Miranda singled to third, then advanced on a throwing error by Diana. Following a sac bunt, Hatamiya bunted to senior pitcher Steve Berardi, whose throw went wild. Miranda would score, and Hatamiya advanced to second on the error. Following a hit batter, Berardi would get the last two batters out. 

In the bottom of the inning, Ursinus would go down in order. 

Berardi took the loss in relief of junior starter Alex Manacher. Manacher went six innings, allowing five earned runs. He walked two and struck out three. Berardi, who fell to 2-3, allowed just three hits in the two innings he pitcher, while striking out two.

Patrick Falkoff improved to 2-0, as he pitched in relief of Gerard. Falkoff had a whole line of two (2H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 2K) in his two innings. Starter Casey Fox went 6.2 innings, striking out seven in getting a no-decision. Ursinus and Haverford finish the two game series on Friday on the Main Line.
