Baseball sweeps Washington

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team ran its win streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep of Washington College on Saturday afternoon at Thomas Field.

In game one, Ursinus scored five times in the third in a 7-4 win, while the Bears (11-6, 3-0 Centennial) batted around in the first in a 9-0 win over the Shoremen (11-10, 2-3 Centennial) in game two.

In the opener, Ursinus took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when freshman third baseman CJ Diana singled to left scoring freshman shortstop Devyn Kerr with two outs.

Trailing 2-1 after the top of third, the Bears scored five runs in the bottom of the inning. Freshman catcher Avery Perez started the scoring by doubling to right field scoring freshman designated hitter Austin Feuerman and sophomore first baseman Chris Jablonski.

Senior second baseman Ralph Aurora would later score on a wild pitch, followed by Perez and junior right fielder James Hoff scoring on RBI hits by freshman left fielder Jose Colon and a sacrifice fly by Diana.

Washington would add two more in the top of the sixth on a two-run triple by centerfielder Scott Matthews, cutting the Ursinus lead to 6-4.

In the seventh, Derr would score on a RBI single by Diana with two outs.

On the mound, sophomore Vince Piccioni struck out four and allowed four earned runs in seven innings, going to 4-0. Senior Steve Berardi pitched a perfect two innings to get his second safe.

Diana finished with three RBI, while Perez had two. For Washington, Matthews had two hits and two RBI.

In game two, Ursinus rode the arm of junior Alex Manacher. Manacher threw a complete-game three hitter by striking out seven and walking one. He was aided by a four spot in the bottom of the first, headlined by

three straight RBI doubles from Feuerman, Jablonski and Aurora. Freshman right fielder Austin Kurey singled home Aurora for the fourth run of the inning.

In the fourth, freshman right fielder Timo Muro scored on a RBI double by Diana for a 5-0 lead.

Ursinus scored four more times in the sixth, with Diana scoring a wild pitch, followed by an error that allowed three runs to score on a single by freshman catcher Alex Campbell.

Kurey and senior center fielder Josh Schnell each had two hits in the win.

Ursinus will host Gettysburg on Saturday in a makeup from a rainout last Saturday. The Bears then will finish their series with Muhlenberg on Sunday.
