Baseball works extra to beat Swarthmore, 9-4

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Ursinus sophomore left fielder Chris Menzies went 3-for-5, including a two-run double in the top of the tenth as Ursinus (7-25, 3-13 Centennial) broke open a tie game to defeat Swarthmore (21-15, 9-7 Centennial) 9-4 on Friday afternoon.

Menzies joined junior center fielder Josh Schnell with three hits each, while both players along with sophomore right fielder James Hoff all had two RBI in the win.

Freshman designated hitter Devyn Kerr had two runs scored in the win.

Trailing 3-0 after three, Ursinus got on the board in the fourth when Hoff grounded out scoring freshman first baseman Chris Jablonski.

In the fifth, Ursinus scored two more as Kerr scored on a bunt by Schnell, which turned into a fielding error allowing Kerr to advance. Junior second baseman Ralph Aurora hit a sacrifice fly to right, allowing senior third baseman Jake Kohler to score.

In the seventh, Ursinus took a 4-3 lead when Menzies scored on a single to right field from Schnell.

In the tenth, Ursinus scored its first run on RBI single by senior catcher Kevin Wilson. Ursinus added another run when Hoff flied out to right, scoring Jablonski.

Junior Chris Ryder got the win in relief of senior Steve Berardi. Berardi threw seven innings, striking out five. Ryder pitched the final three, allowing just one hit while fanning three.

Ursinus hosts McDaniel Saturday to close out the season at the T.
