Baseball downed by Swarthmore, 5-2

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus got two hits from senior catcher Kevin Wilson on the day, but, the Bears (6-25, 2-13 Centennial) dropped the first of a two-game series with Swarthmore (21-14, 9-6 Centennial) 5-2 on Tuesday night at Thomas Field.

Both Wilson and freshman first baseman Chris Jablonski had RBI hits on the day.

Swarthmore was led by Tim Kwilos who went 3-for-4 with two RBI, including a double. Joseph Rizzo, Danny McMahon along with Cody Ruben and Brian Kaissi each had two hits on the day.

Ursinus struck first in the bottom of the first as junior center fielder Josh Schnell scored on a RBI single by Wilson.

Swarthmore added two back in the fourth when Ruben and Kwilos had RBI singles. Swarthmore took a 3-1 lead in the fifth when Rizzo scored on an Ursinus error.

Kwilos would double again in the sixth, scoring Kaissi, for a 4-1 Garnet lead.

The Beas would threaten in the bottom of the eighth as Schnell scored his second run of the day on a RBI hit by Jablonski to cut the Garnet lead to 4-2. However, with runners on second and third with two outs, the Bears were unable to take advantage.

Rizzo scored an insurance run in the ninth when he came home on a Trevor Shepherd RBI single with two outs.

Matt Bertuch earned his fourth save of the year for the Garnet as he pitched 1.1 innings and only allowed a walk. Starter Joe Warren moved to 2-2 on the year as he pitched 7.2 innings allowing three hits, two earned runs and three walks. He struck out three.

For Ursinus, senior A.J. Wright nearly went the distance as he threw 8.2 innings. He struck out one, walked two and allowed four earned runs.

Ursinus will finish the two-game series on Friday at Swarthmore. The Wednesday game with Albright has been postponed and will not be made up.
