Baseball takes down Swarthmore, 5-3

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus put together three runs in the first two innings, then tacked on two more in the seventh as the Bears (15-18, 6-8 Centennial) stayed alive in the Centennial Conference playoff race with a 5-3 win over Swarthmore (19-13, 5-9 Centennial) Friday afternoon.

Senior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse), junior catcher Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick), senior centerfielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and senior first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) each had two hits in the win, while sophomore left fielder Josh Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) had a two-run triple to right center in the seventh accounting for the two runs.

Sophomore right hander Steve Berardi (Hartsville, Pa./Holy Ghost) threw six innings to get the win, improving to 4-2. He struck out three two and walked three. Sophomore left hander Chris Ryder (Douglassville, Pa./Holy Name) picked up his first save of the season, throwing three innings of two hit ball.

For Swarthmore, junior right fielder Tim Kwilos had two hits.

Ursinus took a 2-0 lead after one as Wilson tripled to center scoring Smith. Wilson would later score on a RBI single by Gresh.

In the second, Smith bunted for a single scoring senior third baseman Joel Ackerman (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional).

Swarthmore got on the board in the third as freshman left fielder Zach Powell scored on a double play ground out.   

In the sixth, Swarthmore added another run as Kwilos homered to left center.

After Schnell's two run triple in the seventh, Swarthmore scored one run in the eighth on a RBI by Kwilos that scored sophomore first baseman Nicko Burnett.

Swarthmore senior right hander Zack Weiner took the loss, falling to 4-3. He struck out three and walked four in 6.1 innings of work.

Ursinus travels to McDaniel Saturday.
