Baseball downed by Swarthmore, 9-8

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore's Anthony Montalbano two-run double in the bottom of the ninth capped a four-run inning that gave the Garnet (19-12, 5-8 Centennial) a 9-8 win over Ursinus (13-17, 5-8 Centennial) in a critical Centennial Conference game for both teams.

Ursinus had rallied from a 5-1 deficit in the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead and had increased the lead to 8-5 heading into the ninth inning.

For Ursinus, junior catcher Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick), senior centerfielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and sophomore left fielder Josh Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) all had three hits, while Schnell punched in three RBI.

Senior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse), senior third baseman Joel Ackerman (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) and freshman designated hitter Vince Rondolone (Havertown, Pa./Haverford School) each had two hits in the game.

Ursinus struck first in the fourth, as Schnell grounded out scoring Smith for a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth, Ursinus got five runs back as Gresh doubled to center scoring Wilson and senior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown), while Schnell and Ackerman each had RBI hits. Ackerman's two-run double to field capped the rally.

In the seventh, Rondolone got an RBI as he was hit by pitch scoring Wilson.

Schnell doubled in the ninth, scoring Gresh to give Ursinus the 8-5 lead.

Junior right hander Jake Kohler (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) started the game and pitched 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs. Sophomore left hander Chris Ryder (Douglassville, Pa./Holy Name) pitched 4.2 innings, taking the loss as he allowed six runs and ten hits. He fell to 2-3.

Ursinus will host DeSales on Wednesday.
