Squeezing A Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus freshman shortstop Ryan O'Connell (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) executed the squeeze play perfectly in the bottom of the tenth with the bases loaded as the Bears (11-12, 3-3) earned a 4-3 win over Franklin & Marshall (14-12, 3-3 Centennial) Thursday afternoon in the second of the two game series.

Ursinus trailed 2-1 coming into the ninth, then got a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame then loaded the bases in the tenth before O'Connell laid the bunt down the right field line that scored senior first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford).

Guthridge and senior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse), who scored on the sacrifice fly in the ninth, both finished with two hits.

F&M scored two runs in the top of the first off of sophomore starter Steve Berardi (Hartsville, PA./Holy Ghost Prep), on RBI singles by Brandon Theriault and Kevin Shields. In the bottom of the first, Smith scored on a RBI single by senior centerfielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove).

Ursinus tied the score in the third as junior catcher Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) doubled scoring senior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) .

F&M took back the lead in the fourth as J.T. Triantos singled home Aaron Gillette.

In the ninth, Smith doubled with one out, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. He would score on a sacrifice RBI by Wilson.

In the tenth, Guthridge singled with one out, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a fielding error put runners on the corners, an intentional walk loaded the bases.

O'Connell then hit the bunt that won the game.

Berardi left after the first, giving up two earned runs. Senior Steve Christakos (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) then pitched the next nine innings, striking out five and walking one, while giving up one unearned run.  He improved to 1-2 with the win.

Ursinus heads to Dickinson Saturday.
