Baseball blanked by F&M, 2-0

LANCASTER, Pa. –Franklin & Marshall got one run in the second and third innings, which was more than enough as the Diplomats (14-11, 3-2 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (10-12, 2-3 Centennial) 2-0 on Tuesday in the first game of the two game series at Caplan Field.

Ursinus left eight runners on base during the game, including two on with no one out in the top of the first.

F&M scored its run of the game in the bottom of the second on an error for a 1-0 lead, then went up 2-0 in the third on a RBI single by left fielder Will Benenson.

From there, Matt Valente did the rest as he threw a five-hit, nine strikeout performance improving to 2-3.

Ursinus junior starting pitcher Jake Kohler (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) went the distance as well, allowing just one earned run, while scattering five hits and striking out three. He fell to 2-2 with the loss.

Senior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse) went 2-for-4, while junior catcher Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) and senior first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) had doubles.

The two teams conclude their series on Thursday in Collegeville.
