Split At The Shore

(Release thanks to Richard Stockton Sports Information)

GALLOWAY, N.J. -  Richard Stockton (11-5) and Ursinus (8-9) split a pair of one-run games in the Ospreys' home opener.  Stockton took the first game 3-2 in eight innings for its eighth consecutive win before Ursinus snapped the streak with a 6-5 triumph in the nightcap.

In game one, Dan McGuckin (Sicklerville/Winslow Twp.) singled with one out in the bottom of the eighth and stole second.  McGuckin advanced to third on a groundout and scored the winning run on a fielding error to give Stockton the 3-2 victory.

Stockton had taken a 2-0 lead in the third frame.  Nick Scalise (Northfield/Mainland) singled, moved to third on a double by Justin Gordon (Brick/Brick Memorial) and scored on a wild pitch.  Gordon then came home on a sacrifice fly by Mike Wasco (Riverside/Riverside).  Ursinus knotted the game at 2-2 on a two-run single by Garrett Smith (Syracuse, NY/West Genesee) in the top of the fifth.

Stockton righty Drew Holt (Toms River/TR South) pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts to improve to 4-1 on the season.  Ursinus starter Steve Berardi (Hartsville, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) allowed just three hits in seven innings but did not figure in the decision.  Smith registered two of Ursinus' four hits.

In the nightcap, it was the Bears' turn to post a dramatic win and earn the split.  With Stockton just two outs from victory, Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, PA/Spring-Ford) slammed a three-run homer to right field in the top of the seventh.  The blast turned a 4-3 deficit into a 6-4 Ursinus lead.

Stockton got runners to second and third with none out in the bottom of the seventh.  Pinch-runner George Eisenhart (Harrison Twp./Clearview) scored on a wild pitch with two outs but Ursinus' Alex Manacher (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Twp.) induced a game-ending flyout with the tying run at third.

Earlier, Scalise singled and scored on an error in the fourth inning to give Stockton a 3-2 lead.  Guthridge tied the game 3-3 with an RBI single in the fifth frame.  The Ospreys went back on top 4-3 on a sacrifice fly by Mark Jankowski (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) in the sixth inning, however Guthridge's home run proved to be the difference.

Guthridge finished 2-3 with a homer and four RBI while Joel Ackerman (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Reg.) notched two hits and scored twice.  Mike Bush (Manahawkin/Southern) was 2-3 with a run scored for Stockton.  Manacher earned the win, allowing two runs on two hits in two innings of relief pitching.
