Baseball drops home opener to TCNJ

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The College of New Jersey scored seven runs in the first two innings Wednesday as the Lions (4-6) defeated Ursinus (5-6) 13-5 in the Bears' 2012 home opener.

Ursinus did bang out ten hits in its first game back from Spring Break.

The Bears got three hits from junior catcher Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick), while senior third baseman Joel Ackerman (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional) had three RBI, including a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Senior center fielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) had three runs scored in the loss.

For TCNJ, five players had multiple hits including four players with three hits each. Senior first baseman Jimmy Ruzich was 3-for-4 with three RBI and four runs scored on the day.

On the mound, senior Steve Christakos (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) took the loss falling to 0-1. He struck out one and walked four in three innings of work. In relief, junior A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) went four innings, fanning four and walking two. Sophomore pitcher Chris Ryder (Douglassville, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep) went the final two, striking out one.

TCNJ sophomore Brendan Kelly got the win, improving to 1-1. He struck out three and walked three in six innings of work. Freshman Benito Gonzalez got his first collegiate save, with three innings of work. He allowed just three hits and struck out one.

Ursinus hosts Penn State-Abington in a seven inning doubleheader on Saturday.
