Baseball drops pair to PSU-Behrend

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Ursinus College baseball team faced off against Penn State Behrend in a double-header down on the Bears' Florida trip.  Ursinus could not continue the success from the day before, falling in both games 3-2 and 4-2, respectively.

The Bears led from the first inning during the first game, making the Lions pay for an error that allowed senior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse) to reach.  A single and a ground out later, sophomore Josh Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) had an RBI and the Bears had the lead.

The Lions loaded the bases in the fourth with a walk, hit batter and a single off of junior pitcher A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South ).  A bases loaded walk tied the game up.  Penn State continued its small ball play by adding another run in the fifth on a single and a double.  They added their third run in the seventh during a double play.

Ursinus tried to rally in the seventh with a single and a couple of walks that loaded the bases and walked in a run to bring the Bears within one.  It was not enough and the Bears fell to the Lions in the first game.

Wright took the loss, falling to 0-1. He gave up two earned runs in five innings of work, striking out two and walking four.

The Bears gave the Lions help early in the second game, committing two errors that led to run in the first for Penn State.  The Lions added another run in the third off of a double and gained another run in the fourth, once again making the Bears pay for errors.

Ursinus finally got on the board in the sixth when senior centerfielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) drove in a run on a ground out with the bases loaded.  The Bears added a late run in the seventh from a throwing error.
