Staying Alive: Baseball stays in CC playoff race with 15-0 whitewash of Swarthmore

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team swept the Swarthmore series on Friday, defeating the Garnet by a 15-0 score to improve to 7-9 in league play with one series remaining. More importantly, the Bears are still alive in the playoff race and now hold the tie breaker with Swarthmore should the two teams be tied at the end of the season.

The highlight of the day was the pitching of sophomore lefthander A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) who held Swarthmore (17-13, 8-8 Centennial) to just two hits over seven inning of work, while striking out five and walking three to improve to 2-3.

While scoring 15 runs, the Bears only had eight hits. Five of the 15 runs came in the second on a hit batter, a balk, a walk and an error. The Bears exploded for six runs in the seventh, with senior left fielder Danny Ludwig (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) ending the inning with a two run double.

Ludwig, junior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown), junior center fielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove), junior first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford)  all had two RBI. Junior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse) was 3-for-6, while junior second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) had three runs scored.

Ursinus will host McDaniel on Saturday, weather permitting.
