Baseball downed by Haverford, 6-3

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team committed five errors which led to five unearned runs in a 6-3 loss to Haverford on Friday afternoon in the back end of a two-game series.

The Bears (9-15, 5-7 Centennial) allowed a three-spot in the top of the first and would only get to within three the rest of the game as the Fords (24-5, 9-3 Centennial) moved back into a first-place tie with F&M and Johns Hopkins with one week remaining in the regular season.

Haverford senior shortstop Charlie Carluccio was 2-for-3 as he scored a run and was hit by a pitch twice. His two-run double in the first inning capped the three run first for Haverford.

Ursinus was led by junior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) who was 2-for-5 with a run scored. Freshman designated hitter Ralph Aurora (Plainsboro, N.J./West Windsor-Plainsboro) w and senior third baseman Rob Vogt (Baskin Ridge, N.J./The Hill School) each had a RBI.

Haverford was hot on the base paths, as the Fords stole seven bases with senior second baseman Louis DeRosa and junior first baseman Jake Chaplin each netting two.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third, Ursinus got on the board as Vogt singled to left scoring Sullivan. Haverford would add two back in the fifth as senior right fielder Bobby Bailey and sophomore designated hitter Alex Hudak scored runs. Bailey scored on a RBI single by Hudak, while Hudak came home on a RBI double by sophomore center fielder Matt LIscovitz.

Ursinus got two back in the bottom of the fifth as Aurora scored on an error. He had reached base on a fielders choice that scored junior second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley).

For Ursinus, junior pitcher Nate Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) took the loss falling to 0-4. He pitched 4.2 innings, allowing just one earned run and struck out three. Sophomore pitcher Jake Kohler (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) pitched the final 4.1 innings, scattering two hits.

For Haverford, junior right hander Jonny Williams got the win moving his mark to 6-1. In seven innings, he struck out five and allowed one earned run. Freshman right hander Patrick Falkoff got his second save, allowing one hit in two innings of work.

Ursinus heads to Johns Hopkins on Saturday, weather permitting.
