F&M slips by baseball, 7-6

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team suffered yet another one-run loss on Sunday, falling to Franklin & Marshall by a 7-6 score as the Diplomats (16-11, 8-2 Centennial) scored a run in the bottom of ninth on a RBI single by Kevin Shields with two outs.

The Bears (8-14, 4-6 Centennial) had tied the score in the top of the inning as senior third baseman Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./The Hill School) scored on a sacrifice RBI by freshman designated hitter Josh Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown). Vogt had set up the scoring chance by hitting a single to start the inning, then advancing to second on a single by junior center fielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove). Vogt then stole third base.

For the Bears, Vogt finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. Gresh was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Senior left fielder Danny Ludwig (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) was 2-for-5 with a run scored.

Ursinus took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Gresh hit a home run to left field, bringing in junior right fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse).

After the Dips got one back in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by J.T. Triantos, F&M tied the score at 2-all in the second when Shields scored on a fielder's choice.

Ursinus would take a 4-2 lead in the fifth as Vogt doubled scoring Smith, while Vogt later scored on a Diplomat error. The Bears added another run in the sixth as Ludwig scored on a sacrifice fly by junior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) for a 5-2 lead.

F&M took its first lead in the bottom of the sixth by plating four runs, two coming on RBI singles by Matt Will and Aaron Gillette.

Junior left hander Nate Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) took the loss, falling to 0-2, as he pitched the final 2/3 of the ninth. Started Jake Kohler (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing six runs and four hits. He walked five and struck out one. Junior left hander Steve Christakos (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) pitched the final part of the sixth, allowing just two hits. Sophomore left hander A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) pitched the seventh and eighth and did not allow a hit.

Ursinus heads to Haverford on Tuesday.
