Baseball wins home opener over Muhlenberg, 10-9

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus freshman designated hitter Josh Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) hit a two-run double down the left field line with two outs to propel the Bears (6-12, 2-4 Centennial) to a 10-9 win over Muhlenberg (6-18-1, 3-3 Centennial) on Sunday in the home opener for the baseball team.

Schnell's game winning hit gave him five RBI on the afternoon as the Bears plated three runs in the inning to snap a four-game slide.

Senior third baseman Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./Hill School) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in, while junior centerfielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) and junior second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) each had two hits. Junior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) had three runs scored.

For Muhlenberg, freshman shortstop John Scuderi was 4-for-5 with four runs scored, with senior designated hitter Joseph DiCeilia knocking in three runs.

Freshman left hander Chris Ryder (Douglassville, Pa./Holy Name) got the win in relief of sophomore starter Jake Kohler (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin). Ryder, now 2-0, pitched three innings, allowing two runs and striking out three. Kohler went the first five, giving up five earned runs and striking out two. Junior pitcher Nate Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save.

Mules left hander sophomore Rob Shannon took the loss, falling to 0-3. He allowed four earned runs in two innings of work. Senior left hander Chris Harper got the start, going two innings in which he allowed four runs and five hits.

After both teams traded runs in the first inning, Muhlenberg plated two in the top of the second as DiCelicia hit a two-run single to right field. Ursinus answered back as senior left fielder Danny Ludwig (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) tripled to start the inning, then scored on a wild pitch.

Muhlenberg took a 5-2 lead in the third as junior right fielder Jesse Nusbaum hit a sacrifice fly, followed by Scuderi scoring on a passed ball. Muhlenberg would add two more in the fifth, as sophomore left fielder Joseph Vila and Scuderi scored to make it 7-4.

Ursinus tied the score in the sixth as Argentine, Vogt and Gresh had three straight run scoring singles.

In the top of the seventh, Scuderi and senior second baseman Jeff Puklin scored runs to regain the lead at 9-7.

In the bottom of the eighth, Sullivan singled with one out, followed by a walk by Argentine and RBI from Vogt to put Ursinus within one at 9-8.

Ursinus will host F&M Tuesday.
