Baseball splits with Susquehanna

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Ursinus split a doubleheader with Susquehanna on Monday morning as part of the Ursinus College Baseball team's Spring Break trip.

The Bears lost the first game 4-3, before scoring a run with two outs in the seventh in a 5-4 win in game two.

In the opener, Susquehanna took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second via a throwing error. Ursinus took the lead for the first time in the top of the fourth as freshman designated hitter Josh Schnell (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) doubled home junior second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) and junior shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown).

Susquehanna struck back with three in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. Ursinus got one run in the top of the seventh as Argentine singled home junior center fielder Garrett Smith (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesse).

Sophomore pitcher A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) got the loss, going five innings. He struck out two and walked two. Argentine was 3-for-4 in the opener, while Schnell had two RBI. Smith also picked up two hits.

In the second game, Ursinus won the game as junior first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) scored on a throwing error with two outs in the seventh. He singled to start the inning, then stole second.

Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, Ursinus went up 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning as freshman left fielder Mike Maxsenti (Newport Coast, Calif./Laguna Beach) doubled home junior designated hitter Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove). Guthridge would later score on a wild pitch.

Susquehanna took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth, before Ursinus tied the score in the bottom of the inning as senior third baseman Rob Vogt (Baskin Ridge, N.J./The Hill School) singled home Smith with one out.

Freshman pitcher Chris Ryder (Douglassville, Pa./Holy Name) got the win as he tossed two innings of no-hit ball. He struck out two in relief of freshman Steve Berardi (Hartsvile, Pa./Holy Ghost Prep), who struck out three in five innings of work.

Vogt, Gresh and Maxsenti each had two hits in the second game.
