Baseball takes out PSU-Berks, 7-4

READING, Pa. – The Ursinus College baseball team took a 7-4 decision over Penn State-Berks on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

Ursinus took a 4-1 lead in the fifth, then added two runs in the seventh on the way to the win.

In the fifth, junior third baseman Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) had a two-run ground rule double, followed by a two run single from senior left fielder Tommy Clarke (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon).

In the seventh, senior right fielder Bret Umstead (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored on a fielding error, followed by a RBI single from sophomore first baseman Rich Guthridge (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) that scored Clarke.

In the eighth, senior catcher Chris Fusco (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) scored on a RBI single by Vogt.

Umstead finished 3-for-5, while Vogt and Clarke had two hits. Umstead also scored two runs in the win.

Freshman Jake Kohler (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) got the win, improving to 1-3. He struck out three in six innings of work.

Ursinus hosts Gettysburg on Saturday.
