Baseball swept by McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel swept both ends of a Centennial Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

In game one, McDaniel held the Bears to five hits for a 5-1 win, while in game two, McDaniel (9-15, 5-11 Centennial) defeated the Bears (14-16-1, 5-11 Centennial) 12-4.

In the first game, Ursinus tied the score at 1-all in the fifth inning as sophomore shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Glibertsville, Pa./Boyertown) scored on a sacrifice fly by junior third baseman Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall Prep).

McDaniel took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth, then tacked on three more runs in the sixth.

In game one, senior Bret Umstead (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) had two hits.

Sophomore pitcher Steve Christakos (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) took the loss, falling to 3-3. He struck out two and walked one in 5.1 innings of work.

In game two, McDaniel scored four times in the third and fourth inning to take an 8-1 lead.

Ursinus got its first run of the game in the fourth as junior designated hitter Mike Schwager (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown) scored on a single to right by freshman catcher Kevin Wilson (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick).

In the sixth, sophomore center fielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) scored on an error, followed by Schwager scoring on a single by Sullivan.

Ursinus got one more run in the ninth as Gresh scored on a bases loaded walk in at-bat by Danny Ludwig.

In game two, Schwager was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Sullivan was 2-for-6, while Vogt had two hits.

Freshman pitcher Jake Kohler (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) took the loss, as he pitched 3.1 innings allowing eight runs. He struck out two and walked two.
