COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus scored in every inning, and needed every single one of those runs, as the Bears outlasted Muhlenberg 14-13 on Tuesday afternoon in a Centennial Conference baseball matchup.
The Bears (11-12, 2-7 Centennial) took the opening game of the two-game set with the Mules (11-12, 5-4 Centennial) in a game that featured eight pitchers, 42 hits, 85 at-bats and 29 runners left on base.
Ursinus won the game in the bottom of the ninth as sophomore second baseman Lou Argentine (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) bunted home senior designated player Mike Schwager (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown) with one out and the bases loaded. The bunt, which went down the left field line, was just shallow enough for Schwager to score on the five-man infield that Muhlenberg had set.
The Bears trailed 4-0 after one half inning, and blew the lead twice before winning the game.
Junior third baseman Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was one of three players, Argentine and senior right fielder Bret Umstead (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) who had four hits in the game for Ursinus. Vogt finished with four RBI, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning which game Ursinus a 13-11 lead.
Argentine finished with three RBI, while Schwager had four runs scored.
Senior pitcher Corey Weaver (West Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) got the win, improving to 2-2. He struck out five and walked just one in 1.2 innings of work. Freshman pitcher Jake Kohler (Maple Glen, Pa./Upper Dublin) pitched the 5.1 innings, striking out two and walking a pair. Freshman pitcher Kyle Levocz (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) had two innings in relief for the Bears.
Ursinus hosts Delaware Valley Wednesday.
