COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins swept a Centennial Conference baseball doubleheader from Ursinus on Saturday afternoon.
In game one, the Blue Jays pounded out 14 hits in a 10-1, while in game two, the 19th-ranked Blue Jays (14-3, 3-0 Centennial) posted a 13-0 win over the Bears (8-9, 0-4 Centennial).
In the opener, Ursinus got to within one after two innings at 2-1 as sophomore centerfielder Ben Gresh (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) scored on a balk by Blue Jay sophomore starter Sam Eagleson. Hopkins would break the game open in the sixth, scoring six times.
Gresh collected two hits in the loss, with sophomore pitcher Steve Christakos (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) taking the loss, falling to 1-2. He gave up ten runs in 5.2 innings, while walking four and striking out one. Freshman left hander A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) pitched 1.1 innings in relief, striking out one.
Eagleson got the win, going six innings. He struck out five.
In game two, Ursinus stranded 16 runners on base in the loss and were held to seven hits, all singles.
Freshman right hander Ryan Furlong (Douglaston, N.Y./Xavier) took the loss as he fell to 2-1. He pitched one inning, allowing four earned runs.
Senior left handed pitcher Greg Harbeck got the win for Johns Hopkins, improving to 2-0. He struck out seven and walked three in six innings of work.
Ursinus will host PSU-Brandywine on Tuesday.
