Baseball drops Centennial opener to Haverford, 11-3

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Haverford banged out 14 hits as the Fords (8-5, 1-0 Centennial) defeated Ursinus (7-6, 0-1 Centennial) 11-3 in the conference opener for both teams on Wednesday afternoon on the diamond.

The Fords scored six times in the top of the seventh to blow open a one-run game.

Ursinus freshman pitcher A.J. Wright (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the year.  He gave up six earned runs while walking four. He also struck out three in 6.1 innings of work.

After Wright allowed just one hit in the first two innings, he gave up back-to-back walks to junior right fielder Bailey and sophomore first baseman Jake Chaplin to start the third. Following a groundout, the Fords got on the board with a two-run double from junior second baseman Charlie Carluccio.

Haverford would tack on another run in the fourth as junior right fielder Bobby Bailey’s sacrifice fly to deep right scored sophomore catcher Jeremy Zoll to increase the lead to 3-0. Haverford added to its lead in the sixth on a RBI double from freshman designated hitter Alex Hudak.

Ursinus scored three runs in the bottom half of the sixth to cut the deficit to 4-3. The inning started with back-to-back singles from sophomore shortstop Brandon Sullivan (Glibertsville, Pa./Boyertown) and senior right fielder Bret Umstead (Green Lane, Pa./Upper Perkiomen). Sullivan scored on a RBI double by senior Mike Schwager (Bechtelsville, Pa./Boyertown), followed by a two-run double by senior left fielder Tommy Clarke (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon).

The flood gates opened in the top of the seventh, as the Fords put a six-spot on the board to put the game out of each at 10-3. Two Ursinus errors contributed to the six-run effort, which was highlighted by a two-run triple from junior center fielder Jeff Butera.

For Ursinus, senior catcher Chris Fusco (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) finished 3-for-4, while senior third baseman Rob Vogt (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) was 2-for-4.

For Haverford, junior right handed pitcher Dan Hochberg got the win, improving 1-1. He struck out four and walked two in 5.1 innings of work. Sophomore right hand pitcher Johnny Williams and freshman right handed pitcher Dan Feller combined to throw the final 3.2 innings, allowing just three hits.

For the Fords offensively, Zoll was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Hudak also finished with three hits and three RBI.

The two teams will finish their series on Friday afternoon on the Main Line, but, Ursinus will host Lebanon Valley on Thursday at 4.
