Title: Volunteer Assistant Coach - Goalkeepers

Heather Long is in her first season with the Field Hockey Program. Long brings to Ursinus 28 years of goalkeeping experience to the Bears goalkeeping team.

 

Her coaching career began at Merestead Sports Camp (’01 – ’05), followed by stints with X-Calibur Field Hockey Club, Pottsgrove High School and Mansfield University. Long was on the staff at Mansfield University when they received their first birth to PSAC Playoffs. 

Most recently, Long was selected to represent the United States Women’s over-35 Master’s Field Hockey Team in 2018 Master’s World Cup in Spain.  Long was selected again to the over-35 team at the 2020 Master’s World Cup in England, where  she would be teammates with head coach Janelle Benner. Long was selected to represent the USA for the over-40 team at the 2022 Indoor Master’s World Cup.

 

Long is a 2005 graduate of Mansfield University, where she was a four-year letter winner and starter for the field hockey and softball teams. Long holds the MU, PSAC and NCAA (DII) career saves (860) record and single season saves (341) record. Long was a 2nd team All-PSAC selection in 2003 and earned 2nd Team All-American honors. She was a member of the 2001 ECAC Championship team, the first and thus far only championship field hockey team in MU history. Long also had a very productive softball career, starting all four seasons and earning 2nd team All-PSAC East and All-Mid-Atlantic Region honors during her senior season. She was a member of the 2004 ECAC Championship softball team and led the team in batting (.384) while appearing in all 38 games in 2005. Long was the MU 2003 Fall Female Athlete of the Year, the 2005 Spring Female Athlete of the Year and was the recipient of numerous academic honors. In 2015, Long was inducted in the MU Athletic Hall of Fame.

 

While Long is a volunteer for the Bears, service is a lifestyle. Long is a homicide detective serving Ursinus’ home region of Montgomery County. In prior professional roles, Long has been honored as  Pottstown Police Officer of the Year and  Pottstown Rotary Club Person of the Year for her work as a juvenile detective with the Pottstown PD and has been commended by the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office for her work in solving child sexual assault cases.
