Ursinus Inducts 10 Members into Athletics Hall of Fame

COLLEGEVILLE - Ursinus College inducted 10 individuals into its Athletic Hall of Fame on Sunday, December 12th.

 

Taking their place among the college's all-time greats were John Ackerman '87, Lindsay Cappa '08, Remy Cousart '11, Lauren A. Davis '10, Lindsey Doutt '11, Michael Gizzi '03, Kristen Grimmel '05, Kira Oldham-Curtis '10 and Travis Youngs '10. Former Athletic Trainer Pam Chlad was honored as the recipient of the Blanche B. Schultz '41 Award.

 

The 10 members of the 2021 Hall of Fame class were inducted in a part of a ceremonial brunch event held at the Floy Lewis Bakes Center. Below is a list of the new inductees and their impressive athletic resumes:

 

John Ackerman

Ackerman became one of the most decorated players in Ursinus Men's Soccer history. He ranks second all-time with 40 goals, 18 assists, and 98 points. A two-time All-MAC Selection, Ackerman is only one of three players in Ursinus history to score four goals in a game. He played a key role in leading the Bears to four consecutive ECAC Title games, with the team winning the title in 1983. Ackerman was also a member of the 1984 team that set an Ursinus record for most wins in a single-season with 18.

 

Lindsay Cappa

Cappa was an integral part for Ursinus Field Hockey in one of the most dominant stretches in the program's history. She was a member of the 2006 National Championship team and helped lead the Bears to a Centennial Conference title in all four years on the team. A third-team All-American, Cappa also earned first-team All-Region honors in 2007. Cappa was named to the All-Centennial second team in 2005 and 2007.

 

Remy Cousart

Cousart was a three-time All-Centennial Selection and earned NABC and D3hoops.com Second Team All-Region honors as a senior in 2010. Cousart was an integral part in helping lead the Bears to the 2008 Centennial Conference Championship and their second-ever appearance in the NCAA Final Four. Cousart remains as the only player in Centennial Conference history to record over 1,000 points, 700 rebounds, and 500 assists for their career. He ranks third all-time in Centennial history for assists, fifth in assists per game, and 17th in total rebounds.

 

Lauren A. Davis

Davis established herself as one of the most dominant pitchers in Ursinus softball history and in Division III during her time on the team. A three-time Centennial Conference pitcher of the year from 2008-2010, Davis was also named ECAC South Region Pitcher of the Year in 2010. Davis is one of 22 players in Centennial Softball history to earn the distinction of collecting three First Team All-Centennial nods and is one of three players to earn a trio of pitcher of the year awards. Behind the strength of her pitching, Davis led the Bears to a pair of Centennial Conference Championship Game berths, with the team winning the title in 2008.

 

Lindsey Doutt

Doutt was a two-time First Team All-American selection in 2009 and 2010 and earned two NFHCA First Team All-Region honors. Doutt also earned a pair of First Team All-Centennial selections as well as she anchored the Bears defense. She was named to the Centennial Conference Silver Anniversary Field Hockey team in 2018 behind her postseason accolades. She helped lead the Bears to Centennial Conference titles in all four seasons on the team and berths in the NCAA Tournament as well with three appearances in the final four.

 

Michael Gizzi

A three-time All-Centennial Conference selection, Gizzi was a dynamic force for the Ursinus baseball team. He added a third team Mid-Atlantic Region honor in 2003 and was an integral part in the Bears most recent Centennial Conference title in 2000. Gizzi is the Bears all-time program record holder with 16 triples and ranks second all-time in runs scored with 129. He ranks in the Top 11 for seven statistical categories in Ursinus program history.

 

Kristen Grimmel

Grimmel's outstanding career on the Ursinus Gymnastics team included seven All-American honors with three coming in All-Around, two on the vault, two on the floor, and one on the beam. Grimmel was named ECAC Gymnast of the Year in 2003 after becoming the ECAC All-Around and Vault Champion. She has her name all over the Bears career record books as she holds records in Vault, Floor, and All-Around categories.

 

Kira Oldham-Curtis

Oldham-Curtis was a three-time NCGA champion and was named an All-American on 13 separate occasions. Oldham-Curtis was named the NACGCW East Region Gymnast of the Year in 2010 after earning first place in both the all-around and the beam along with tying four fourth on the bars at the NCGA meet. Her performances helped lead the Bears to win the 2008 ECAC Championship and finish runner-up at the NCGA meet in 2007.

 

Travis Youngs

As a member of the Ursinus track & field team, Youngs was a six-time Centennial Champion between the indoor and outdoor seasons in the triple jump and the high jump. Youngs was a nine-time Centennial medalist and earned the 2010 Centennial Conference most outstanding performer honor during the Indoor Championships. He qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship Meet in 2009 in the triple jump and is the current Ursinus record holder in the triple jump for indoor.

 

Pam Chlad

Chlad became a fixture for the athletics landscape at Ursinus during her 44 years spent on the campus. Chlad joined Ursinus Athletic training staff in 1976 and helped launch the sports medicine and athletic training program into a full-fledged, renowned operation. Chlad became the first credentialed athletic trainer at Ursinus after earning her bachelor's degree in nursing from Widener in 1973. Chlad's position at Ursinus afforded her a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become the official athletic trainer of the United States Field Hockey Team, coached by a pair of Ursinus alumna in Vonnie Gros and Marge Watson. Chlad also served as a professor in the Ursinus College Health and Exercise Physiology department. She has served as a board member on the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers Society, which works to promote the growth of the profession and encourages the employment of athletic trainers in all schools.
