Four Bears Named Academic All-Centennial

2016 Winter Academic All-Centennial Team

LANCASTER, Pa. – Four Ursinus College student-athletes were among the 53 named to the Winter Academic All-Centennial Team released Tuesday morning by the conference office.

To be nominated for the Academic All-Centennial Team, a student-athlete must receive both all-conference and Academic Honor Roll recognition, which honors sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher.

Senior Alyssa Polimeni of the women's basketball team, junior Erin Farrell of the women's track and field team, and senior Corinne Capodanno and sophomore Olivia Tierney of the women's swimming team represented the Bears on the conference's prestigious list.

Polimeni earned honorable mention recognition after a standout senior season that saw her break her own school record with 128 assists. She averaged 12.6 points (10th CC), 6.0 rebounds, and 5.1 assists (2nd), leading the league in free throws made (121) and attempted (172) by a wide margin. Polimeni became the 14th member of the 1,000-point club at Ursinus and ranks second on the program's all-time assist list with 356.

Polimeni was named to the Academic Honor Roll for the third straight season, and became the first player in program history to collect Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, given to a junior or senior member of the all-conference team with the highest GPA.

Farrell defended her title in the 200-meter dash at the indoor conference championships to earn first team All-CC status, and garnered honorable mention laurels for a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash. A second team all-conference nominee in soccer, Farrell also appeared on the inaugural Fall Academic All-Centennial squad.

Capodanno became just the third swimmer in CC history to win the 200-yard freestyle three times, also collecting gold medals as a member of the 200, 400, and 800 free relays as well as the 400 medley relay.

Capodanno is making a return trip to the NCAA championships after earning All-American status in the 200-yard freestyle in Shenandoah, Texas a year ago. She set a new Centennial Conference record with a time of 1:50.75 in the prelims, good for ninth overall, and finished 16thin the finals. She also participated in the 50-yard freestyle finals. This time, Capodanno will be competing in the 50 free, the 100 free, and the 200 free.

Tierney, meanwhile, landed on the All-CC first team after becoming the first Ursinus swimmer – and only the fifth in conference history – to win multiple gold medals at the championship meet. She was also part of the victorious 200- and 400-yard medley relay teams.
