Volleyball drops 3-0 match to Swarthmore

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College volleyball team battled Swarthmore before dropping a 3-0 decision to the Garnet (15-11, 3-6 Centennial) on Wednesday night at Helfferich Hall. 

Set scores were 25-19, 29-27 and 25-21.

Ursinus was led by senior Anahi McIntyre and sophomore Karla Thiele who each had nine kills, with junior Gina Powers getting seven. 

Powers had 15 assists with freshman Emily van Mulbregt chipping in with 12.

Defensively, junior Leah Masiello had 26 digs, which was a match-high. Thiele got 19 and Powers had six. 

Prior to the match, Ursinus honored its two seniors: McIntyre and Mara Berzins.

In the first set, Swarthmore broke open a 10-10 tie with six straight points to go up 16-10. Ursinus got back within three (16-13) , before Swarthmore scored three more points to go up 19-13. 

Ursinus was able to close to within four at 22-18, but, Swarthmore scored the last three points of the set.

In the second set, both teams traded the lead frequently, before Ursinus had set point on Swarthmore at 25-24 but could get the two-point lead. 

The final set saw Ursinus lead 18-14, before Swarthmore outscored the Bears 11-4 down the stretch.

Ursinus heads to Washington College on Saturday.
