Volleyball downed by Haverford, 3-0

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus got double digits in kills from sophomore outside hitter Karla Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins Senior) and senior outside hitter Anahi McIntyre (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West),  but, the Bears (7-9, 0-5) dropped a 3-0 decision to Haverford (11-4, 2-1 Centennial) on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference volleyball play.

Set scores were 25-20, 25-14, 25-20 in favor of the Fords, who got a match-high 16 kills from Meg O'Day.

Thiele finished with 13 kills on the evening on 38 attack attempts, while McIntyre netted 11 kills on 28 attack attempts.

Junior setter Gina Powers (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) assisted on 20 kills, with freshman setter Emily van Mulbregt (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) getting six on the night.

Senior middle blocker Mara Berzins (Perkasie, Pa./Strath Haven) had three solo blocks.

Defensively, Ursinus got 17 digs from junior libero Leah Masiello (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth's), with junior defensive specialist Joy Oakman (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon) getting 11.

Trailing by six midway through the first set, Ursinus crawled its way back into the match as sophomore outside hitter Kathryn Yoo (Hokendaugua, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) earned four straight points for the Bears via a service ace, two Haverford attack errors and a kill form McIntyre.

After Haverford took the second set, Ursinus stayed within two points most of the third set, eventually getting to within one at 20-19 but could not turn the corner.

Ursinus heads to Johns Hopkins on Saturday.
