Volleyball splits a pair of matches

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College volleyball team went 1-1 at its lone home tri-match on Saturday. 

In the opener, the Bears dropped a five-set match to McDaniel 3-2l, before rebounding to beat Penn State-Harrisburg 3-0. 

In the McDaniel match, Ursinus lost by set scores of 15-25, 25-23, 16-25, 25-29 and 15-13.

Sophomore outside hitter Karla Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins Senior) had a match-high 25 kills for the Bears, with junior right side Lindsay Doyle (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac), freshman right side Danielle Kenny (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) and junior setter Gina Powers (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) each having five. 

Powers scooped up all 42 assists in the match, while getting four service aces. 

Junior libero Leah Masiello (New Castle, Del./St. Elizabeth's) had 20 digs defensively with Powers getting 13.

Senior middle blocker Mara Berzins (Perkasie, Pa./Penn Ridge) had three solo blocks. 

Against PSU-Harrisburg, Ursinus won by scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 20-9.

Thiele had 15 kills to lead the Bears, while Powers had seven. 

Powers had 22 assists, while freshman setter Emily van Mulbregt (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) had six service aces. Masiello had eight digs in the win, while Berzins had three solo blocks.
