Women's Tennis Edged by Washington College, 6-3

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus women's tennis team wrapped up the home portion of its 2021-22 season with a 6-3 setback to Washington College on Wednesday evening at the Floy Lewis Bakes Center in Centennial Conference action.

 

 

With the loss, the Bears record drops to 9-8 overall and 3-5 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Shorewomen improved to 10-6 overall and 4-4 in conference play.

 

 

The teams battled back and forth through doubles play and the Shorewomen won two of the first three matches to gain the early advantage at 2-1. Sophomore Claire Burke and first-year Shannon Stewart won the first point of the match by defeating the duo of Katie Ruppert and Bin Nguyen at number three doubles. Washington's Alisha White and M.C. Diaz-Nazario leveled the match at one after taking down the number two doubles team of sophomores Caitlin Vinsonhaler and Avery Samer by a score of 8-2. The number one singles duo of first-year Allie Armour and senior Maddie Russell suffered an 8-4 loss at the hands of Irene Meng and Piper Sartison.

 

 

In singles play, the Shorewomen won the first four matches to clinch the victory over the Bears. Sartison bested Burke 7-5, 6-1 at number three singles and Diaz-Nazario defeated Vinsonhaler 6-2, 6-1 at the number four position. White then edged Russell 6-2, 6-2 at number two singles for the winning point of the match. Armour dropped a competitive number one singles match to Meng 7-6, 5-7, (1-10) before the Bears won the last two matches of the night. Samer defeated Nguyen 8-5 in one set played at number five singles and junior Ava Compagnoni earned an 8-4 triumph over Ruppert at number six singles.

 

 

Ursinus will conclude its regular season on Saturday, April 30th as they will travel to face Dickinson for a 1 p.m. match.
