Women's Tennis Opens at ITAs

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Rookie Allie Armour opened her Ursinus College women's tennis career with a flourish, advancing to the semifinals in both doubles and singles as the Bears made the trip down to Mary Washington for the ITA Championships last weekend.

Doubles

The Bears put a pair of duos into the quarterfinals of the B2 bracket. Caitlin Vinsonhaler and Avery Samer swept aside their first-round foes from Stevenson, 8-0, before falling just short in an 8-6 defeat to a team from Sweet Briar. The Ursinus pairing trailed 4-1 before staging a late rally.

Making their collegiate debuts, Armour and Stewart advanced all the way to the semifinals. They edged Salisbury in a first-round tiebreaker, 8-7 (3), then stormed back from a 5-2 deficit to secure a tight 8-6 decision in their quarterfinal clash with a team from Bridgewater. They ran into a strong Averett squad in the semifinals, bowing out with an 8-3 defeat.

Cara Freedman and Maddie Russell, in their third season as the Bears' No. 1 doubles pairing, split two matches in the championship bracket. They fell to Lynchburg by an 8-3 count before rebounding to defeat Arianna Goitz and Molly Michel of Centennial Conference rival Dickinson, 8-5.

Singles

Armour also made waves in the B2 singles draw. She started with a major upset of Washington College senior Alisha White, a three-time All-CC performer, rallying from 4-1 and 6-3 deficits to send the match into a tiebreaker. She then overcame a 3-0 hole and closed with a flourish, taking seven consecutive points to snag an 8-7 (3) triumph. Armour drew a strong opponent in the semifinals and conceded an 8-3 defeat to Christopher Newport's Kenda Womack.

Russell was matched up with the No. 3 seed in the first round of championship singles and fell, 8-2. She then dropped her consolation match, 8-4, to Mary Washington's Riley Smith.

Avery Samer represented the Bears in the B4 bracket, where she lost by an 8-2 decision to top-seeded Sofia Andrade of Sweet Briar. Samer was awarded a walk-over victory in the consolations.

Caitlin Vinsonhaler prevailed in an 8-5 contest against Bridgewater's Ali Keister in the first round of the B5 singles bracket, then played tough in an 8-4 semifinal loss to Averett's Linnea Sjostrom Krook.

Stewart won her first-round B6 match against Catholic's Abigail Cassidy by an 8-5 scoreline, then fell to top-seeded Hannah Carter of Salisbury, 8-2, in the semifinals.
