Impressive Finish

Impressive Finish

By Ursinus College Athletic Communications

The Ursinus College Women's tennis team completed the fall portion of their season by posting a 9-0 win at Immaculata on Thursday afternoon.

The Bears (1-0) made a winner out of new head coach Pete Smith in his women's coaching debut.  Smith, who has coached the Ursinus men for seven seasons, was impressed with his team's performance.

"I thought the team played great today.  We had a nice mix of freshman and upperclassmen in the lineup, and everyone came through in a big way," Smith noted. "I am very encouraged with this group heading into the spring season."

Ursinus got off to a fast start against Immaculata in the doubles portion of the match, jumping to a quick 2-0 lead.  Freshmen Ashley Nguyen and Aileen Bevard were solid in their first collegiate doubles match together, posting an 8-3 win at first doubles.  At second doubles, senior Audrey Whitebloom paired with freshman Ariel Danziger to record an 8-2 victory.  In the third doubles slot, senior Christina Cromwell and junior BreAnna Bashaw were down 3-0 early, but rallied to win 8 of the last 10 games and secure an 8-5 win and extend the lead in the match to 3-0.
In the singles portion of the match, it was more of the same as the Bears won all 6 matches in straight sets.  Whitebloom, Bashaw and Cromwell swept the second, third and fourth flights, respectively.  At the top of the lineup, Nguyen was dominant in her debut at the first singles position, winning handily, 6-0, 6-1.  Bevard and Danziger closed the match with straight sets wins at the fifth and sixth flights.
The Bears will return to action in March 2015 with matches on their Spring Break Trip in Orlando, Florida.
