Leitz Captures Bronze Medal in 200 Fly

SHENANDOAH, Texas – Meggie Leitz and Clara Baker hardly needed luck to give the Ursinus College women's swimming team another piece of history on St. Patrick's Day.

On the third day of competition at the NCAA Championships, each placed among the top 16 in the 200-yard butterfly to mark the first time the program has ever produced multiple All-Americans in the same year – much less the same day, in the same event.

Leitz turned in a thoroughly exhilarating performance in the finals, leading most of the way before capturing a bronze medal with a clocking of 2:01.63 that shattered the Centennial Conference record that had stood since 2008. Leitz, who joined Baker as one of four All-Americans in Ursinus women's swimming lore, is the first Bear ever to finish in the top three at a national event.

Leitz' historic swim eclipsed Swarthmore's Anne Miller, who recorded a time of 2:02.44 nine years ago. Miller's former benchmark had been one of only two CC records that occured before 2014; the longest standing one is now the 200 back, which dates all the way to 2004.

After being timed at 2:04.78 in prelims, Baker shaved more than second off that in her night swim, recording a new personal record of 2:03.56 to place 12th and finish just ahead of the previous school mark of 2:03.60 from a 10th-place showing in this event a year ago. Baker, who finished 10th in last night's 100 fly, became an All-American for the fourth time in her career.

Leitz easily surpassed Baker's previous school record with a 2:02.49 that gave her a sixth-place standing in the prelims. Baker, meanwhile, vastly outperformed her projected seed placing of 28th with a 2:04.78 that put her in 14th place and qualified her for the consolation final.

Baker concluded her sophomore season with two more All-America certificates. With four under her belt, she trails only Jennifer Derstine, who registered six from 1991-93, on the school's all-time charts. Derstine and Baker are the only two swimmers in Ursinus history to earn multiple All-America honors in multiple years.

Sophomore Peyten Lyons was also in action on Friday, placing 31st with a time of 57.56 in the 100-yard backstroke prelims.

Leitz and Lyons will conclude the 2016-17 season on Saturday with the 200 back. Lyons (2:03.26) is seeded 24th, while Leitz is the 36th seed (2:13.44).
