Baker Breaks CC Record at Golden Ram Classic

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Sophomore Clara Baker broke her own Centennial Conference record in the 100-yard butterfly to headline the Ursinus College women's swimming team's performance at West Chester's two day Golden Ram Classic.

Baker's 55.38-second swim made her the Bears' lone winner of the weekend, placing her .14 seconds ahead of West Chester's Meghan Keithly. It was .16 seconds faster than her previous mark, which she set at last year's CC championship meet, and currently places her fourth in all of Division III.

Junior Katherine Porter moved into second in the league in the 100 fly with a 57.73, which would have been the top mark before Baker's record-setting effort.

Baker was impressive throughout for Ursinus, taking third in the 200 fly (2:06.64) and fifth in the 50 free (24.44), both of which vaulted her into the top time in the CC this season.

Junior Sydney Gundersen registered a CC-best 1:55.11 in the 200 fly and a season-best 53.25 in the 100 free, elevating her to second in the conference and good for third overall at this meet. Porter (2:07.66) finished fourth in the 200 fly.

Senior Alexandra Hemp (55.04) and freshman Grace Emig (55.28) took seventh and eighth, respectively in the 100 free, while freshman Margrethe Leis (1:58.16) placed seventh in the 200 free.

Sophomore Peyten Lyons took over the top slot in the 200 IM (2:11.24) and the 100 back (58.19), where sophomore Katherine Madden (1:01.43), Porter (1:02.91), and senior Alexandra Hemp (1:03.70) all turned in impressive efforts. Madden was sixth in the 200 IM (2:14.87) and seventh in the 400 IM (4:45.31), where she was followed by sophomore Caroline Powell (4:51.95), sophomore Gabriella Timuscuk (4:52.79), and senior Catherine Wilson (5:02.13).

Freshman Haley Sturla moved into third on the CC performance list with an 18:05.78 in the 1650-yard freestyle. She was followed by a host of Bears, including senior Allison Emick (18:17.45), freshman Margrethe Leis (18:17.48), sophomore Kathryn Longenecker (18:30.05), and junior Rachel Weil (18:44.41).

Sturla took fourth in the 100 breast (1:09.78), with Timuscuk (1:10.20) in fifth, Powell (1:10.26) in sixth, and junior Olivia Tierney (1:11.56) in seventh. Sturla was also fourth in the 200 breast (2:29.49), this time succeeded by Timuscuk (2:31.68), Tierney (2:32.60), and Powell (2:34.83).

Lyons, Hemp, Baker, and Gundersen were runners-up in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.46. Emig, Hemp, Baker, and Gundersen were third in the 200 free relay (1:38.43), while Lyons, Baker, Timuscuk, and Gundersen placed third in the 400 free relay (2:07.70).

The Bears return to action on Friday, January 13 at Cabrini.
