Tan Reaches Citrus Invite Finals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Ursinus College wrestling team sent five of its members south to Fort Lauderdale to close the year at the annual Citrus Invitational. Sophomore Christopher Tan reached the final of the 125-pound bracket to headline the two-day efforts of the Bears, who earned 52.5 points to place seventh overall.

Tan was the lone Bear grappler to remain alive in the main draw on Friday. The top seed did so by taking down Cornell Colleges Vikash Hypio in 1:37 after receiving a first-round bye. He advanced to the championship bout via a 9-1 victory against UNC-Pembroke's Jayquon McEntyre, but Augsburg's Victor Gliva, the number three seed, collected the title with a 6-4 decision.

A pair of Ursinus seniors, Alexander Kramer and Matan Peleg, recorded fourth-place showings. Kramer, the number two seed at 149, dominated Cornell College's Jake Allen in his first bout before bowing out of the main bracket with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Mason Geary, who also appears on the "Contender" list of the latest d3wrestle.com national rankings. Kramer bounced back in a big way with a 4-0 blanking of Augsburg's Alex Wilson, who was seeded fourth and ranked fifth in the nation by d3wrestle.com and tenth by the NWCA.

Kramer began Friday's proceedings with an 11-3 defeat of sixth-seeded Jarrad Lasko of John Carroll, and a forfeit allowed him to compete for the third-place prize. Kramer lost 11-4 to Augsburg's Ryan Epps, the number three seed, to settle for fourth.

Peleg, seeded third in the heavyweight division, was pinned by John Carroll's Russ Porter in the first round. He rebounded with two straight wins on Thursday, the second a fall against Williams' Nicholas Beauchamp, to preserve his run in the consolation rounds.

Peleg shut out Augsburg's Ethan Hofacker, 6-0, and notched a 7-1 victory against Oneonta State's Adam Grosbeck, a semifinalist, to advance to the third-place match. He was defeated, 6-3, by La Crosse's Konrad Ernst.

Senior Corey Markovitch picked up a 17-0 victory over Cornell's Casey Jauch in the first round at 174, but dropped his next two bouts, and classmate Robert Rein went 0-2 at 184.

The wrestling team hosts the annual North/South Duals on Saturday, January 7.
