Jasinski finishes eighth at NCAAs

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Ursinus junior 157-pounder Richard Jasinski (Sellersville, Pa./Pennridge) finished his run at the NCAA Wrestling Championships on Saturday by finishing eighth, earning All-American status.

After advancing to the consolation quarterfinals on Friday night, he dropped his opening match to Jon Garrison of Mount Union, 4-2 in overtime, before falling in the seventh place match by a 5-1 score to Mark Savenok of Wheaton (Ill.).

Against Garrison, Jasinski battled to a 0-0 tie in the first period, before Garrison was awarded a point for stalling with 33 seconds left in the second. Garrison picked up another point on an escape with 26 seconds left for a 2-0 lead. 

In the third, Jasinski got a point for an escape with 1:53 left, then was awarded a point for riding time to send the bout into overtime. In the overtime period, Garrison got a takedown with four seconds left to end the bout.

Against Savenok, his second time facing Jasinski in the tournament, Savenok got a take down with 16 seconds left in the first period. Jasinski earned an escape five seconds into the period, before Savenok got another take down with five seconds left in the second for a  4-1 lead. An escape five seconds into the third accounted for the final points of the bout. 

Jasinski finished his year with a record of 36-8, the most wins by a 157 pounder in a season in school and conference history.
