Softball Downed by No. 2 Salisbury and Cortland

SALISBURY, Md. – The Ursinus softball team opened a weekend series against No. 2 Salisbury and Cortland on Saturday afternoon and suffered two setbacks by scores of 17-0 and 13-1.

 

With the losses, the Bears fell to 7-4 overall in their first two of four games this weekend at Salisbury. Meanwhile, the second-ranked Sea Gulls improved to 22-2 after defeating the Red Dragons earlier in the day as well while Cortland moved their record to 6-6.

 

GAME ONE: Salisbury 17, Ursinus 0

Serving as the visiting team, the Sea Gulls jumped on the Bears early with four runs behind hitting three home runs in the top of the first inning to take the early lead. Salisbury led the game off with back-to-back home runs before adding its final two runs off a home run with two outs. Senior Mackenzie Brennan looked to bring the Bears back by leading off the bottom of the first with a double, but she would advance as far as third base before the inning ended. Ursinus retired the first two Sea Gulls in the top of the second before Salisbury had four-straight batters reach and went up 6-0 following a pair of singles. Salisbury added three more runs in the top of the third to go up 9-0 following another pair of home runs and added four more off a grand slam in the top of the fourth inning. The Sea Gulls closed the game with four more runs in the top of the fifth behind three coming from their seventh and final home run of the game.

 

GAME TWO: Cortland 13, Ursinus 1

The Bears looked for redemption in their second game of the day, but once again fell in an early deficit as the Red Dragons scored its first two runs off a double. Cortland added three runs in the bottom of the second to go up 5-0 before the Bears scored their first run of the game off a two-out single from senior Allyson Meakim. The Red Dragons put the game away with eight runs on five hits and one error in the bottom of the third inning to go up 13-1

 

Ursinus returns to action on Tuesday, March 29th as they will travel to Immaculata for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
