Softball Shuts Down Del Val

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – A pair of shut-down pitching performances from junior Kaitlyn Willis and senior Devan Cinalli guided the Ursinus College softball team to a non-conference sweep at Delaware Valley on Thursday afternoon.

Willis struck out eight in a three-hit effort as the Bears (15-19) claimed a 3-1 victory in Game 1 before Cinalli picked up her second career win with a four-hit complete game gem to spur a 6-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Game 1: Ursinus 3, Delaware Valley 1

Each team recorded just three hits in a duel between Willis and Jamie Stefani, but four errors by the Aggies opened the door for Ursinus. In a contest that went without a base-runner for the first three innings, the Bears scored three unearned runs in the top of the sixth.

Freshman Marissa Beebe led off the frame with a walk and took third when classmate Renee LeClerc reached on an error. Sophomore Sammi Donato's sacrifice bunt advanced LeClerc to second, and both runners scored when Delaware Valley committed two errors on the same play. An infield single by sophomore Samantha Garritano precipitated a miscue by the first baseman, allowing fellow sophomore Kayla Quinn to come around with a 3-0 lead.

The Aggies broke up Willis' shutout in the seventh, but the right-hander got Kayla Keller to ground out with a runner on second to end the game.

Willis struck out eight without a walk in a three-hitter, and needed only 63 pitches – 54 of them strikes – to mow through the Aggies' lineup.

Donato had a double for the Bears, while Beebe finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a run.

Game 2: Ursinus 6, Delaware Valley 1

The Bears did all of their scoring in the first two innings, starting with a two-run triple by sophomore Faith Carson in the top of the first.

Ursinus tacked on four more in the second, all of them coming with two outs. Donato's single through the right side plated Beebe before Quinn delivered a two-RBI triple and scored on an error to stretch the lead to 6-0.

The Aggies got on the board in the third but Cinalli was otherwise dominant, retiring the last 11 batters she faced. The senior did not record a strikeout but walked only one and allowed just four hits in her first career complete game.

Carson finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Quinn scored twice and drove in two more for Ursinus.
