Men's Tennis splits two in Florida

The Ursinus Men's Tennis team split a pair of matches Tuesday, defeating Principia College 7-2 in the afternoon before dropping a tough 5-4 decision to St. Scholastica under the lights in Orlando.

In the first match against Principia, the Bears (4-1) got off to a solid start, taking a 2-1 lead after doubles.  The duo of Dylan Marsh and Tyler Arsenault registered the first win of the day with a 8-0 whitewash in the third flight.  At second doubles, Evan Lord and Logan Metcalf-Kelly continued their recent strong play with an 8-5 win to give Ursinus a 2-1 lead.

In singles, the Bears took 5 out of 6 matches to garner the 7-2 win.  Evan Stutchin and Tyler Arsenault were solid in straight set wins in the first and second flights, while Dalton Lynch and Dylan Marsh got wins at the fourth and fifth flights.  Junior Mike Melchiorre chipped in with a 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth singles.

In the nightcap, the Bears faced St. Scholastica (9-3), winners of five straight.  The match was tight all the way through before the Saints emerged with a 5-4 victory.

The doubles proved pivotal as St. Scholastica swept all three matches.  After dropping the third doubles tilt 8-2, the Bears lost back to back 9-7 heartbreakers at the first and second doubles slots.  But facing a 3-0 deficit, the Ursinus men did not go quietly in the singles portion of the match.

Needing to win 5 of 6 matches to take the match, the Bears certainly made things interesting.  After Logan Metcalf-Kelly won when his opponent retired due to injury, Tyler Arsenault recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win at third singles to cut the lead to 3-2.  Evan Stutchin continued the comeback, dropping only 4 games in his win at first singles.  With the match tied at 3-3, St. Scholastica managed to win the fifth and sixth singles slots to take an insurmountable 5-3 lead and win the match.  As it turned out, the Saints need both of those matches as Evan Lord took the second singles match 4-6, 6-3, 10-2, making the final score 5-4
