Men's Swimming Takes Third at CC Championship

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Ursinus College men's swimming team re-wrote its record books all weekend long at the Centennial Conference championship, and the end result was one of its best showings ever at the conference meet.

Three more program standards fell on Sunday, giving the Bears 11 for the championship; Ursinus broke four of its previous five relay records at the conference meet, and tied the other. The Bears took advantage of all their historic performances to log 533 team points, good for third overall. Swarthmore captured its first conference title with 720 points, ending the six-year reign of Gettysburg, which placed second with an even 600.

The third-place finish was the highest for the Bears since 2014 and only their third top-three showing in program history.

Sophomore James Callaghan highlighted the night for the Bears with his second gold medal of the championship, just edging junior teammate Colin McNamara with a 1:54.43 in the 200 fly to become only the second Ursinus swimmer to win a conference title in the event – and the first since Chris Smith in 2012. The thrilling finish made Callaghan and McNamara the first pair of teammates in Ursinus history to go 1-2 in a championship event.

Sophomore Johnathan Myers also qualified for the A final in the 200 fly, placing eighth in 1:57.25.

Freshman Jacob Menzer started the night with his third individual program record of the weekend, this one following an NCAA B cut of 16:12.92 and a fourth-place showing in the 1650 free. Senior Marcus Wagner, the previous record-holder, took sixth in 16:21.02. Sophomore Kevin Gill (16:40.85), freshman Daniel Powell (16:50.50), and junior Christopher Barthold (16:51.73) finished ninth through eleventh, respectively.

Senior William Benn captured the silver medal in the 200 back, logging a time of 1:52.73 that was bested only by Swarthmore's Liam Fitzstevens, who won his third straight CC title at 1:49.00. Sophomore Devin Nielsen (2:02.10) placed 13th overall.

Freshman Casey Lear won the B final in 47.43 seconds in the 100 free, with sophomore Travis Venables (47.47) right behind in 10th place.

Sophomore Maxwell Coulter made history in the 200 breast prelims, finishing eighth in a school-record 2:10.46, which nudged past the old mark of 2:10.70 established by Dave Yazbeck in 2013. Coulter's time dipped to 2:11.16 in the final, where he maintained his eighth-place swim. Senior Spencer Collopy logged a personal best 2:11.81 to finish in 12th.

Quite fittingly, the Bears ended the championship with another school record. Lear, senior Dylan Cooper, Menzer, and Venables combined for a fourth-place finish in the 400 free relay and a clocking of 3:08.30 to surpass the previous standard of 3:09.72 from 2012.
