Fairchild Dominates as Men's Lacrosse Bests Blue Jays

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – A dominant first half and a near-flawless face-off performance from senior James Fairchild proved a perfect recipe for another impressive result for the Ursinus College men's lacrosse team, which completed a three-game road trip with a 12-7 victory at Elizabethtown that wasn't as close as the final score.

Fairchild won all but one of his 15 face-offs and senior Logan Panaccione produced a career-high six points as Ursinus (4-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back in handing the Blue Jays (4-2) their first home loss of the season.

The Bears needed only a minute to grab a lead, as sophomore Ian Desenberg – fresh off a four-goal effort in last weekend's victory at Montclair State – scored unassisted to stake the visitors to another quick start. Junior Matthew Cioeta tallied less than two minutes later, and Ursinus seized a three-goal advantage when Desenberg finished off a feed from sophomore Gerard Brown.

Elizabethtown got within 3-2 early in the second quarter with back-to-back goals, but Ursinus rattled off five unanswered markers to leave the Blue Jays behind. Brown set up senior Steve Mussoline and Panaccione before scoring a goal of his own, and the Bears got goals from freshman Peter DeSimone and Panaccione in the final minute of the period to go into halftime with an 8-2 lead.

Junior Conor Fitzgerland and DeSimone tallied in the third quarter, and Panaccione's third goal gave Ursinus its biggest lead of the afternoon at 11-3 with 12:20 remaining in the fourth. Elizabethtown scored four times over the last seven minutes and change to make the final margin less lopsided.

Panaccione's three assists were a career high, and the hat-trick was his second of the season; he needed only three shots to score his three goals. Brown stretched his Centennial Conference-leading assist total to 16 with another multi-assist effort; the sophomore, who had 17 all of last season, has registered at least two helpers in every game this season.

Desenberg, DeSimone, and Mussoline each scored twice for the Bears, with Mussoline offering his first multi-goal effort of the year. DeSimone, meanwhile, collected four ground balls and added an assist. Cioeta had a goal and an assist to complement four ground balls, and senior Liam Duke handed out his second career assist on Harrison's goal just before intermission.

Fairchild was entirely dominant at the X, winning 14-of-15 draws to give the Bears a sizeable advantage in possession time. He matched a career high with eight ground balls and put forth his best face-off performance to date; Fairchild went 10-for-11 against Mary Washington and 15-of-17 versus Muhlenberg a year ago.

Senior Patrick O'Donoghue had four ground balls and two caused turnovers to lead the Bears' defensive effort, and classmate G.B. Harkins racked up a career-best five ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Brian Neff made ten saves to help offset the Blue Jays' 31-29 shot advantage.

The Bears corralled 43 grounders, their highest total since grabbing 53 in a 14-7 win against Wheaton (Mass.) almost exactly two years ago.

Ursinus welcomes Widener to Patterson Field on Saturday, March 19 before opening conference play at home against Swarthmore a week later.
