Men's Lacrosse Edged at Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Ursinus College men's lacrosse team twice came back from multi-goal deficits in a clash of rising national powers at Frostburg State, but the Bears were unable to complete the rally as the Bobcats broke the final tie with 7:34 remaining and held on for a 7-6 victory on a chilly afternoon in Maryland.

Sophomore Gerard Brown had a goal and two assists for No. 16 Ursinus (2-1), which dug itself an early 3-0 hole and trailed 6-4 in the fourth before a concerted rally left them on level ground.

Brown's goal off a feed from freshman Peter DeSimone pulled the Bears to within 6-5 with 11:12 remaining, and sophomore Ian Desenberg facilitated senior Tucker Noel's game-tying strike with 8:22 to play. But Frostburg State (5-0) won the ensuing faceoff and scored on the next possession to take a 7-6 lead before surviving a final Ursinus push to remain unbeaten.

DeSimone rung the post with 5:37 to go, and the Bears sent five more shots at Bobcat net-minder Tom Kraemer, but two of them were saved and the others missed the mark.

Ursinus outdid the Bobcats in shots (37-29), ground balls (31-24), and turnovers (16-12), but ten saves from Kraemer and a 10-5 edge on face-offs helped Frostburg State survive.

The Bobcats, who were receiving votes in the most recent USILA Division III poll, stormed out to a 3-0 lead before ten minutes had expired. Senior Steve Mussoline finally dented the scoreboard for the Bears late in the first quarter, and Desenberg cashed in on a helper from Brown to get within 3-2 early in the second. After a Frostburg State tally, markers from senior Mike Durst and sophomore Lou Harrison pulled Ursinus even at 4 at the break.

The Bears went scoreless in the third, allowing the Bobcats to take control with a pair of goals before the visitors equalized one last time.

Senior Patrick O'Donoghue paced Ursinus with five ground balls and two caused turnovers, while junior Matthew Cioeta forced three of his own. Harrison and DeSimone added three ground balls apiece, while senior Logan Panaccione matched that effort and handed out an assist.

Senior goalkeeper Brian Neff (2-1) finished with seven saves.

The Bears continue a three-game road trip at Montclair State on Wednesday, March 9.
