West Chester doubles up Field hockey, 6-3

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Division II West Chester marched out to a 4-0 halftime lead, as the Golden Rams (12-3) defeated Ursinus (11-3) 6-3 in the annual Snell Cup game at Eleanor Frost Snell Alumnae Field on Sunday.

In the 69th meeting between the two schools, the Golden Rams saw five different players score goals.

Ursinus got a goal and an assist from junior forward Amber Steigerwalt (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks South) and senior midfielder Megan Keenan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) in the loss.

West Chester, ranked second in Division II, scored all four of its first half goals within a 9:20 span. The first goal came from junior midfielder Dayle Paustian at the 12 minute mark off of an assist from senior midfielder Alexa Moran.

At 16:08, sophomore midfielder Mary Spisak scored to give West Chester a 2-0 lead, followed by a goal from senior back Kristina Scherrer on a Paustian assist at 22:04.

The final goal in the first half came from sophomore forward Rachal Toppi at 21:20 on an assist from senior back Alexis Versak.

Ursinus cut the deficit to 4-1 just 29 seconds into the second half when Brakel scored on a breakaway pass from Steigerwalt.

Toppi scored her second of the game at 37:43 on a penalty stroke to give West Chester a 5-1 lead, followed by Steigerwalt scoring her first goal of the game at 46:47 on an assist from Keenan, cutting the Ursinus deficit to 5-2.

Versak would score West Chester's last goal at 49:10, followed by a penalty stroke from Keenan at 58:08 for the final 6-3 margin.

Ursinus senior goalkeeper Danielle DeSpirito (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) made eight saves with three different players having defensive saves for Ursinus. For West Chester sophomore goalkeeper Brianna Magner made four saves in 65 minutes, while junior Sarah Krause made two saves in five minutes of play.

Ursinus will host Washington College on Wednesday night in the final regular season home game.
