A Strong Effort

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.- Ursinus College freshman forward Danielle Stong (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown) scored 7:06 into the extra period as the fourth-seeded Bears (11-7) defeated Washington College (9-10) 2-1 on Thursday evening in the first round of the 2012 Centennial Conference tournament.

Ursinus advances to Saturday's semifinal game against F&M, set for noon.

Stong scored on a rebound in front of the cage, scoring her fifth goal of the season. Ursinus had rallied from a 1-0 deficit when freshman defender Megan Keenan (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) scored on an assist from senior midfielder Julie Pilla (Mullica Hill, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) with 6:32 left in the second half.

Washington, who had defeated Ursinus 3-2 in overtime during the regular season, had taken a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when senior midfielder Kristen Wille scored unassisted on a shot that went into the right corner of the cage.

Before Ursinus tied it up, Washington had played solid defense and junior goalkeeper Steph Harryman kept the Bears off the board. She finished with 13 saves on the night.

Ursinus goalkeeper, freshman Danielle DeSpirito (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) made six saves in the win, improving to 6-2 on the year.

With the win, Ursinus improved to 17-1 all-time in the Centennial Conference tournament. The Bears have won the last eight championships.
