F&M Walk-off Stuns Baseball in the 9th

LANCASTER, PA. - The Ursinus College baseball lost a heartbreaker to Franklin and Marshall on the road Tuesday afternoon by a score of 3-2. The Diplomats earned the walk-off Centennial Conference victory after an error in the ninth inning allowed Pat Elliot to score from third.

Junior righty Casey Murphy took the mound for the Bears and turned in a stellar performance. The Merion Station, Pennsylvania native went seven innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out six Diplomats.

Franklin and Marshall senior Charlie Wright turned in a similar outing, going seven innings, allowing two earned runs while fanning six batters as well.

With two outs in the fourth, the Diplomats jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Bobby Falese blasted his fourth homerun of the season over the left-field wall. Ursinus tied the game at one a piece when Solomon Griffith slashed his first home run of the season over the left field wall in the fifth.

F&M quickly responded by regaining the lead in the bottom half of the inning after Spencer Berson singled through the left side, scoring Elliot from second with two outs.

In the sixth inning after a one-out double by Peter Balos, the Bears would tie the game at two a piece after Tim Pyne came through with a base knock to center. Ursinus stranded two runners in the inning after a flyout to centerfield and a groundball back to the mound got Wright out of the inning.

In the seventh inning, both Murphy and Franklin and Marshall's Charlie Wright each retired the side in the order.

In the ninth inning, the Bears had runners on the corners but a flyout to centerfield would end the rally and send us the home half. With one out, Pat Elliot earned a triple after a fly ball found the ally way in right center. In the ensuing at-bat a ground ball snuck under the glove of the Bears shortstop that allowed the winning run to cross the plate.

First basemen Tim Pyne led the way for Ursinus going 4 for 4 with an RBI single. Griffith also added two hits at the plate for the Bears.
