Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Last-Minute Heroics Lift No. 1 Garnet Over Bears

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa.—Trailing the Ursinus College Bears by two points with 32 seconds to go, No. 1 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball made two big defensive stops that led to a four-point swing and an 88-86 road win on Wednesday night.

In the game's final minute, Ursinus, holding onto that two-point lead, tried to milk the clock. Bears' guard Jimmy Kpadeh drove to the hoop on the right side with the shot clock winding down, but his anticipated clear path to the hoop soon disappeared as Swarthmore center Nate Shafer swooped in and rejected the layup. Vinny DeAngelo collected the rebound for the Garnet and pushed the ball into the front court quickly. The Garnet missed on a deep three, but Colin Shaw hustled to the left block, and the rebound fell right into his lap. Shaw went up for the uncontested layup and knotted the score at 86-86.

Ursinus tried to hold for the final shot, but Shaw again stepped up and poked the ball free on a dribble handoff. As Shaw rushed up the court, he was fouled with just 1.7 seconds to go and sent to the line for two free throws. Shaw, unfazed by the pressure of the situation, buried both free throws to give Swarthmore the 88-86 lead. Shaw hasn't missed a free throw all year. He's a perfect 11-for-11 from the stripe.

Ursinus took one last heave from long range, but couldn't hit the buzzer beater.

Swarthmore improved to 7-0 with the win and 2-0 in Centennial action. Ursinus dipped to 4-3, 0-2 Centennial.

Shaw finished with a career-high 18 points in 33 minutes of play off of 7-of-13 shooting. Zac O'Dell scored a team-high 23 points while going 9-for-11 from the floor. O'Dell asserted himself defensively with a game-high five blocks.

Ryan Ingram added 11 points, and Justin Tucker pitched in 10 in just 14 minutes.

Five players from Ursinus reached double figures; Ryan McTamney scored a game-high 28 points for the Bears.

Swarthmore shot 54.8 percent from the floor and 42.9 percent from deep. The Garnet held a 33-30 rebounding advantage over the home team.

The lead changed hands 16 times and the score was tied at 13 different points in the back-and-forth battle.

Swarthmore continues Centennial Conference play at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Gettysburg College.
