Volleyball Falls to E'Town

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Ursinus College volleyball team was unable to keep pace with a high-powered Elizabethtown squad, which rolled to a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-20, 25-12) in Thursday's non-conference finale.

Mackenzie Garner piled up 14 kills for the Blue Jays (18-15), who hit .571 (13K-1E-21TA) in the third set and .366 for the match.

Freshman Olivia DeBonte led the way with six kills in the penultimate match of the season for Ursinus (9-18). Junior Kelly Piotrowicz tallied 11 digs, 10 assists, and five kills and senior Sydney Gonzalez produced five assists, five digs, and four aces.

The Bears fell in an early 7-1 hole in the opening set but shaved the margin down to 11-9 on a kill by Piotrowicz and back-to-back Blue Jay errors. Elizabethtown, however, went on another 7-1 run to restore a sizeable advantage and cruised to a 25-16 decision.

The Blue Jays appeared well on their way to another comfortable win in the second set, but Ursinus had other plans. Down 22-14 in the late stages, the home side strung together six consecutive points – two of them on kills by DeBonte and two more on a pair of aces by sophomore Hannah Merges – to make it 22-20 and force an Elizabethtown timeout. A service error short-circuited the momentum and the Blue Jays took advantage with the next two points for a 25-20 score.

Ursinus led 2-0 in the third on a Piotrowicz ace, but Elizabethtown won 12 of the next 13 points en route to a 25-12 score in the final frame.

The Bears close out the season on Saturday against Bryn Mawr, when they will honor Gonzalez as part of a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
