Volleyball drops 3-1 decision to PSU-Berks
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Ursinus College volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 20-25, 25-14) match to Penn State Berks on Wednesday night at Heifferich Hall.
Ursinus (5-8) got a match-high 14 kills from sophomore Allison Raff (Landenberg, Pa./Avon Grove), but the Bears were out-hit by the Nittany Lions (7-6), .167 to .034, dropping their third-straight.
Raff added 11 digs to complete a double-double, her fifth of the season, while senior Karla Thiele (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins Senior) had nine kills and a team-high 21 digs. Junior Danielle Kenny (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) posted seven kills on 15 swings, hitting .333 to aid to the Ursinus attack. Junior setter Emily van Mulbregt rounded out the box score with 19 assists and a pair of aces.
Penn State jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of 10 hitting errors from Ursinus to take the first set, 25-16. The Nittany Lions continued to roll in set two, hitting .300 in a 25-17 win to go ahead, 2-0.
Penn State led 18-15 late in set three and appeared to be heading for a sweep. However, a 6-0 run with Kathryn Yoo (Hokendauqua, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) on the service line put the Bears ahead, 22-18. After the teams traded sideouts, the Ursinus got kills from Raff and Thiele to close out the set with a 25-20 win, forcing a fourth frame.
In the final set, Penn State opened up a 6-1 lead and didn't look back. The Nittany Lions hit .290 in the stanza, holding Ursinus to under .060 to close out the win with a 25-14 set score.
Ursinus is back in action at home on Saturday. The Bears host a tri-match, taking on Franklin & Marshall at 11:00 a.m. and Arcadia at 3:00 p.m.
